Big Island of Hawaii

Information and Area Attractions including Hilo

Hawaii is the name of the 50th state.  Hawaii is also the name of the largest island in the state, so to avoid confusion, locals call the island of Hawaii, the Big Island.  There are three main towns on the Big Island: Hilo, on the windward (wet) side of the island is the closest airport to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and Mountain House Vacation Rental and Hydrangea Cottage Bed & Breakfast.  Kailua-Kona on the leeward (dry) side of the island is a popular tourist and deep sea fishing resort area.  Waimea (or Kamuela) is rolling ranch land.  Mauna Kea (home to the observatory) and Mauna Loa are the two largest volcanic mountains.

The Big Island is a land of contrasts.  World famous Kona Coffee, Hawaii Chocolate Covered Macadamia Nuts as well as anthuriums and orchids are the major island exports.  In historic Hilo town you can bake on the beach and see the snow capped peak of Mauna Kea between the palm trees during winter months. At Volcanoes National Park you can walk on terrain so moon-like that the astronauts trained there before going to the moon and watch the Big Island grow ever larger as lava flows into the ocean.
